From "Geneology of John Smith Carris Family", Published 1954, Washington, Iowa:
John...was raised by his grandparents, Lewis Kerris and wife, from early childhood, remaining with them until about 18 years, at which time he decided to seek his fortune "Out West". At the time "Out West" was Western New York where there was great excitement about the construction of the Erie Canal. He worked on this project for about two years as a day laborer, thence returning to his home in Eastern New York.
