******************** Walter always gave Mabel cash to buy groceries. She would frequently save a little of it and stash it all around the house -- in socks, under matresses, under the dining room table, etc. When the depression hit, that extra money came in handy. Ann bought the table after Mabel died and also used it to stash extra cash, but it didn't work as well for her because she'd remember the cash was there and spend it. From: Ann Kirkove & Charlotte Fagen Walter and Mabel had a dairy business in the Keota area. In fact, Charlotte Fagen remembers Walter Junior taking her along on the milk delivery route before they were married. She enjoyed his company -- thought he was funny. I think she said something about him making up songs. Anyway, when refrigerators became available, Walter and Mabel purchased one on credit. It was a nice big one to use with the milk business. (Charlotte remembers it.) When the depression hit, it became difficult for their customers to pay for the milk, and Walter and Mabel worried constantly about being able to make the payments on the refrigerator. They determined never to buy another thing on credit. From: Margaret Poole & Charlotte Fagen When Walter Loren died, Mabel had a very difficult time conducting business because nothing was in her name. She didn't even have a driver's license. In order to begin establishing credit, she went with Margaret to Des Moines where she applied for a department store credit card and made a purchase. As soon as she returned home, Mabel wrote out a check and sent it in to pay off the balance on the new card! From: Margaret Poole In Memory of MABEL W.
